Windows Explorer Closes When Entering Folder Containing Video

When the Windows Explorer under Microsoft Windows XP opens a folder containing .AVI files it may attempt to index the file in order to extract information for a thumbnail. This can cause problems if an .AVI file is very large or there are many .AVI files in the folder.

Here's how to disable this behavior, step-by-step:

  1. Start the Registry Editor (filename: REGEDIT.EXE) by selecting Start -> Run from the Taskbar, entering "REGEDIT.EXE" as the name of the program you wish to open, and clicking on the OK button. The Registry Editor will appear.
  2. In the tree control on the left, navigate to the [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}] key.
  3. Right-click on the {87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E} key and select Export from the pop-up menu. TheExport Registry File dialog window will open.
  4. Give the registry key a memorable name such as "Preview .AVI Files in Explorer" and save it (the default location is the My Documents folder or choose a location you will remember).
  5. Right-click on the key again and select Delete from the pop-up menu.

You can now close the Registry Editor. You may need to restart the system in order for the change to take effect.
