The logon screen in Vista is relatively attractive but it gets a bit boring after a while, especially if you reboot or log off often. Wouldn't you like to change it up and give it your own personal touch? This month's utility makes customizing Vista's logon easy to do.
Vista Logon Changer enables you to change the background image and sound clip that plays at logon. In addition, it comes with 10 photographic images, 8 original drawings, and 12 original sound files. You can also use your own images and sound clips.
Using Vista Logon ChangerVista Logon Changer is very easy to use. You simply select the image you want to use, the sound you want to use, and then click Apply Now.
Background Image TabOn the Background Image tab is a selection of images that come bundled with Vista Logon Changer. When you click on an image, the image appears on the right side of the application.
If you want to see a larger version of an image simply double click on the image and a new window will open up.
If you want to import your own images, click the "Import image into Vista Logon Changer" link at the bottom of the tab. A standard Windows file dialog will appear. Find the file you want to import and click open. The image will appear in the background image list.
To remove images from the list, select the image and click Remove. The image will be removed from Vista Logon Changer but it'll still be on your file system. In other words, the image won't be deleted.
Startup Sound TabTo change the startup sound, click on the Startup Sound tab and then on one of the included sound clips, or import your own. You can preview the clip by clicking on the sound and selecting the Play button that appears on the right side of the application, or by clicking the play icon associated with the sound.
If at any point you decide that you don't want to use the selected sound or image, hit the Clear Selection button next to the image or sound.
Restoring the Original Image and SoundIf you decide that you'd like to go back to Vista's original look and sound, start Vista Logon Changer and click Restore.
The image and sound files used for logon are stored in a file called imageres.dll. A backup copy of this file is stored in:C:\Windows\winsxs\ x86_microsoft-windows-imageres_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_da86e136fafaf563\imageres.dll. When you click the Restore button, Vista Logon Changer replaces the current imageres.dll with the original from the backup location.
